Title: Re: [Fed-Talk] New MacBooks - can camera come out?
Lewis,
The epoxy fix, or drilling a hole in the lens is
more than sufficient. If someone has an accreditation official that says that
this isn't sufficient... Well, I'd start looking for a better place to work.

I spoke to the Apple product marketing team, and for now,
they are not working on a solution to remove the camera from either the iMac or
MacBook Pro.
I agree that a significant commitment to purchase might
change their minds, and I am sure there is a federal reseller who would be
willing to aggregate those orders (smile).
While discussing the issue with them someone mentioned a
low-tech fix might solve the problem. Specifically that obscuring the
lens with epoxy has been accepted as a legitimate fix in some places for cell
phone cameras. Have any of you in secure locations found this to be
true?
Thanks,

LLNL uses an authorized reseller who performs some of the final computer
configuration. One of their tasks is to make sure there isn't a wireless card in
any computers. Requiring that they modify the computers (Macs, Dells, etc.)
would be under their contract with LLNL.
I have also talked with our Apple account rep about a special
configuration; in this case for DOE. She said that Apple wants a commitment for
1000 computers before they will change the production line. DoD is much larger
than DOE and would carry much more weight if they asked Apple for a special
configuration (no iSight, no Wireless/Bluetooth, etc.). My initial contact with
Apple was for diskless Macs, which is easy in an iMac and Powermac and could be
done by a reseller. It isn't easy in a Powerbook or MacBook Pro and should be
offered by Apple.
I have not received any information from Apple about the previous iMac with
iSight configuration although I was told they were working on an official
removal guide that would not violate the warranty (see
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300205 for iMac G5 w/o iSight).
If the iSight is easy to remove, then the reseller should be able to do it for
less money than having Apple change their production line (Apple's
suggestion).
Who wants to push the request for a special configuration for government
and enterprise users through Apple? There have been special educational
configurations so it's not totally out of the question.
Same boat here. Can't use the new MacBooks
unless the camera is disabled, and preferably not with software. Also, still
need to maintain the Apple warranty, so we can't just open the case can cut
wires or anything (which is probably very difficult anyways). Our reseller is
looking into possibilities. MacBooks may single handily kills Macs in many
government agencies.
Thank
you,
