(Note moving the slider does get me the alert sound, though still no
sound from mail...)

Given that screen shot it appears you have an issue a little deeper
then
this one. You should see a section under "Audio Output" to
configure your
output device, it looks just like the "Audio Input" section. I'd
fire up
System Preferences -> Sound and take a look in there, based on the
upper
right I assume the settings in sound are correct (on my G5 it's called
"Built-in Audio") but I'd take a peak anyway.

Tony,
Input set to 44100 Hz for input (was already at that setting) so this
doesn't seem to be the solution... Funny how output is not supported
though...

Scott,
Some applications alter the system-wide audio I/O settings such
that some other applications will no longer play sounds. Audacity
is one application that I have seen that does this. It sets the
sampling rate to 96000 Hz.
If this is what is happening on your system, you can use the "Audio
MIDI Setup" application to reset the sampling rate to 44100 Hz.
Audio MIDI Setup should be in your Applications/Utilities folder.

Could just be a MacBook Pro issue, but sound disappears once in a
while, but only from selected applications (iTunes will play fine,
mail has no sound)...
