What's the error and are you sure you're not selecting the

I know that I am not choosing the incorrect certificate because the
second available certificate warns that it doesn't match my e-mail
address.
And this means what? It means the second available certificate has
an email address associated with it that does not match the email
address you are using to sent the email, nothing more, in fact it
likely means you are choosing the incorrect certificate, perhaps even
the "Identity" certificate which does not have an email access
associated with it and can't be used with email.
On my CAC there are three certificates: Email Encryption, Email
Signing, and Identity. If you launch Keychain access with the CAC
in, you can get information about the certificates: assuming you
have Keychains showing (press button at bottom left of window labeled
"Show Keychains"), the top most item on the left shoudl "smart card
#1" (#2, etc). Select that item, you will now see if you have a full
load of three certificates, the three labeled with your name you can
get information on (cmd-I).
For two of certificates under the heading "Subject Alternative Name"
you find "RFC 822 Name" followed by the email address the CAC is
setup for (they should be the same I believe). I'm not familar with
what "NT Principal Name" is for.
