fetchmail will do just that, and it is included with OS X.
specifics can be found at:
man fetchmail
from the terminal window.

We have a user on our campus (Naval Postgraduate School) whom the powers

Exchange server. He is looking for a way to POP his mail from exchange to
his /var/mail folder on his G5, the way he used to with Unix.
One of our team suggested using PINE to do so and I was brought in as "the
Mac guy" to make that happen.
Not being a PINE user since college, (and then only a novice one at that) I
did some reading up on it and it seems to me to be the wrong way of getting
him what he wants, he prefers to do as much command line as he can and
although PINE fits that bill, it uses other programs to get and send its
mail, plus it seems to create its own directory structure rather than a user
configurable one.
Seems to me that there must be something better for this purpose, his
ultimate goal is to connect to the server via POP, get his mail dumped into
his /var/mail folder and organize and respond from that point. He was using
mailx with no complaints until recently.
Any suggestions?
