One of the major trends is virtualization, allowing native Mac OS and
Windows (or two version of Mac OS, or whatever combination of OSes)
to run simultaneously on the same hardware. The new chips by Intel
(which may very well be part of the expected new hardware
announcements at WWDC) will provide greater support for this
virtualization.
For example, perhaps you could run three different version of Mac OS
X on a single XServe, and if one of the OSes crashes, the other two
remain fully operational. Alternatively, you could run Mac OS X and
Windows Vista on the same desktop, so you could occasionally switch
to Windows for that rare Windows application. For example, several
government sites we deal with (e.g., for processing our contracts)
will reject any web browser that is not Internet Explorer running on
Windows -- we keep a Windows box here for that purpose. (We have
Microsoft's VirtualPC, but it so hideously slow we forked out money
for a new PC)
So I expect by this time next year we won't be talking about dual-
boot or even PC emulation in Mac OS X but multiple OSes running
natively side-by-side on the same hardware.
