Can't help you much but would appreciate a cleaner answer from anyone
else who's had this problem.
This happened to me on two computers I upgraded to 10.4.8. I managed
to restore one to the proper state by doing an archive/install. But
that didn't work on the other one. On the second one I'm afraid I
have to save my files, and do a reinitialize of the HD --- then a new
install.
I called AppleCare on both (a few weeks ago) and they couldn't figure
it out (except for suggesting running disk utility --- which didn't
help --- and the archive/install --- which only helped on one).
