Okay, Rich Trouton was right-on about the web services not starting
(the problem with the error_log file is that it never got far enough
to add anything to it). Changing the httpd.conf did the trick.
New problems large:
1. I had the installer install X11 over the X11 existing on the
machine. Xterm now crashes on launch on the local machine, though
X-windows works fine on the a remote machine. Stuck on that one also.
2. I go into Server Admin on my ftp machine, look at the settings
for ftp, I go to advanced. I see that is "Home Directory with
Share-Points". I ftp into the machine as a user, and sure enough I
am in my home directory. On my web server machine, I do the same,
same settings according to Server Admin, I ftp in and I am at ftproot
instead. I even copy the ftpaccess file from the one machine to the
other, reboot etc, and I still end up at ftproot instead of my home
directory.
Problem Small.
1. The exact form of the zone and named.conf files for DNS often
change slightly, and I wanted to compare the ones I have with the new
example files. The new example files are not in the location the new
documentation says they should be (if you look at
Network_Services_v10.4.pdf it mentions a files for examples
/var/named/example.com.zone. Sure wish I could find this file.
This one is actually not so small. Small changes in what is wanted
in the named.conf file and the zone files can really affect how the
DNS behaves, and this has happened before with version changes in the
server supporting later versions of BIND etc. The example files are a
good check that we are using the latest version as the basis for our
files.
These are very frustrating problems because while of varying
consequences, they are taking a lot of time to solve.
Thanks for any suggestions.
