Both the remote Mac and PC are on the same network. As usual, the Mac is a piece of cake and windows, not so much. I've done some searching on the forums and this seems to be a big problem for windows users. Macs can see the share given the IP address of the distant router and PCs aren't.
I'm at work and heavily fire walled so I can't try it, but I'm going to try messing with the NET USE command when I get home. I might be able to NET USE \\myhomeIP\sharename and force a connection.

Are the Mac from which you are able to connect over the internet, and
the PC from which you aren't, on the same segment? I don't know the
answer to your question, but it just occurs to me that if the Mac and the PC are dealing with different firewall setups, it may be that, and not the procedure you're doing on the PC. It doesn't seem to me like an entry in the hosts file would help, but I guess it won't hurt either.

Of course,
However, I think that the Bonjour is visible only on the local subnet??? I just wish that Windows were as user friendly as the Mac. All I had to do was enter my router's IP on my Mac Book and it found the drive. It was even easier on my local net, a message popped up saying that the drive had been found.
I haven't tried it yet, but perhaps the hosts file in Windows needs to have my home router IP listed?

Just a thought, but do you have to have Bonjour for Windows installed on the Windows machine?
