I'm running OSX 10.4.8 and been using my CAC quite successfully
using Apple Mail and Safari. I would like to use my CAC for logging
into my account. I've read the Smart_Card_Setup_Guide and some
discussions on DOD CAC readers. This does not seem to be easy to
do. I have the following problems:
1. I am not familiar with vi or emacs, and so I'm hesitant to try
editing the authorization file in the root. Is there an easier
method to change the authorization file? What doesn't Apple just
mod the file in first place?
2. The setup guide states that the attribute lookup method is
required, but in the discussion chain there were instructions for
binding the public key hash. Which is the way to do this? Again, I
am not familiar with the editors for modifying the configuration file.
Even if you're not familiar with editors, "pico" is about as friendly
as it will get at the command line. You use the arrow keys for
navigation, and all of the applicable commands are displayed in the
window. You'd invoke it using something like:
sudo pico /etc/authorization
The free TextWrangler is a graphical editor that can also be used for
various configuration and other files:

Keep in mind that editing such files is very common, and something
that is easily done in any managed setting. Understandably, this can
change when you don't have anyone directly supporting you, and you're
not familiar with command line editors and so on. There are a variety
of reasons Apple hasn't included this functionality out-of-the-box.
