Simply configuring the second ethernet interface with the IP
information is adequate. No DNS services are needed if you always
use the IP address to reach the interface. Otherwise, if you want to
reach this interface/ip from another system using a hostname, you'll
need to add an entry to the remote system's /etc/hosts file or to
the DNS server. It is perfectly fine to use private IPs in scripts
and programs.

I am interested in setting up a fixed address, private non-routed
subnet and I haven't found very good documentation on this. I want
to do this on the second ethernet ports. I know the range of IP
numbers to use, but my questions are:
1. If I connect the computers through a smart switch is that
adequate, or do I need a DNS server on the subnet also.
2. In programs or scripts, is it sufficient to use the private IP
address to access another machine, or do I need to list that
somewhere in something like an /etc/host file?
Any info that could help me set this up would be appreciated.
