Leopard for security's sake?
I don't think Apple will state any policy "officially", but I
believe their unofficial policy is to support the current OS line
and the most recent update to the last OS line. For example, during
the lifetime of 10.5 (Leopard) Apple will still support the last
major release (10.4.10, soon 10.4.11) of 10.4 (Tiger).
Clearly I don't speak for Apple, but I think you are relatively
safe for now. I can't upgrade my major machines to Leopard until
the Common Criteria package comes out for them. :-(
This is correct. Apple has, for some unknown reason, refused to have
a published EOL/End of Support policy for operating systems.
However, based on what we have learned since Mac OS X 10.0, Apple
has always, to date, provided security updates for 10.x and 10.x-1,
where 10.x is the current release. This means that security updates
will continue for 10.4.x until 10.6 is released. Apple generally
"supports" the immediate prior release in other ways, as well. There
has been only one instance where I can recall a security update
being issued for a 10.x-2, and that was for 10.1.5, shortly after
10.3 was released.
Also, I'd add one more thing:
It's actually our experience, as a very large Mac site, that Leopard
has been one of the *better* (if not the best so far) upgrades to Mac
OS X, in terms of problems after the upgrade. Yes, there are certain
segments of people (X11, CAC users, etc.) having more problems, but
Leopard is certainly not having any more problems than any other Mac
OS X upgrade we've ever had. And if anything, it's noticeably better.
