I used the system profiler
system_profiler SPApplicationsDataType
To find all the applications my own system, as Jerry asked (below) - It
worked fine but...
It returned a lot of information that is not useful for my task, and
possibly missed some important installed apps. What I want to do next is get
only the apps that do not come with OS X and get app files that do not end
in .app - I am told that files installed with Fink or Debian might or might
not end in .app, though I do not have any of these on my system for testing.
Do they use their own log file I could reference? Does anyone have or know
of a script/tool or procedure to list this set of apps, or suggestions that
would help develop one? I probably cannot rely on Remote Desktop on all
machines I want to query.
Thanks, Don

We¹re undergoing a wall to wall inventory of hardware and installed software
(result of A-76). I have a requirement to come up with a way to list all of
the applications installed on a computer including Open Source software that
may or may not be installed in the /Applications folder (/usr/local, /~/bin,
etc.) I know that System Profiler does some of what I need but the
additional need would be that it needs to be in script form, whether shell,
perl, etc. Has anyone come across such a tool?
Thanks in advance
Jerry
