NetBarrier is an outstanding piece of software. It has some built-in
configurations that will likely do what you want. Attached is a
snapshot:
There is an agent that assists you with configuring services and there
are a great number of pre-defined popular services that are available
via an elegant interface.
It also performs spyware blocking nicely (even hidden registrations
are not something I want):
The "Ask (Deny on time-out)" provides a dialog when an application
tries to talk out thru the network port. You can block at that point
or permit. Netbarrier remembers and that is how these lists as
pictured are built. You can optionally drag an application into the
left hand list and permit all, deny all (aka Stuffit) or hand assign
the ports if you really want to. At a minimum, the "ask" function
provides an excellent port use documentation tool.
Oh yes, almost zero system performance impact and stable enough to run
on very high performance servers for months if not years between
reboots.
The download will run under the demo-ware license for 30 days:

I was very pleasantly surprised at how easily I could set up a new
LAN with my MBP and new router. But I can't get the router firewall
to work. I realized that Leopard already has a firewall but hear
mixed reviews about it and the configuration seems puzzling.
I'm looking for some suggestions on how to configure the firewall in
a way that will keep the computer safe without unintentionally
blocking something important (especially other devices on the LAN).
