Funny, I often wonder the reverse:
When are SmartCard vendors going to include standard tokend/Keychain
support in their drivers, so all the Mac OS X applications "just work"
instead of always coming out with their kludgy Firefox/Thunderbird-
only PKCS#11 software?
(In all seriousness, I think both should be available and supported
for any serious SmartCard vendor who claims Mac OS X compatibility.)

Can you comment on when Apple is going to support the industry
standard PKCS#11 in its applications?

Have you tried accessing it with Firefox? You might try using the
Coolkey PKCS#11 module[1] to get smart card support to work with
Firefox. We haven't transitioned yet, but the Linux users around
here have been anxious to know if it will work; our current ERP
system depends on IE/Windows.
Coolkey on Linux should work without any serious problems.
On OS X it's a little more complicated than that. :/
Folks looking to leverage this kind of solution should keep a few
specifics in mind:
* This is accessible only via PKCS#11
* Only PKCS#11 Applications will be able to use it (i.e. Firefox) --
NOT Apple Applications
* PKCS#11 on Mac OS X 10.4 / 10.5 is not integrated into Smart Card
Services / KeyChains
