Booting from an install CD, launching Disk Utility, and doing a repair
permissions would have achieved the same end. Which is probably the
GUI they were talking about in the first place.
To be fair, we all know it's UNIX under the hood, but that enables us
to be more dangerous than you think. For example, it's perfectly
possible to delete the *running kernel* from disk and keep the system
running--until a reboot, that is. Once that kind of power is an open
possibility--and someone smart enough to know to boot to single user
mode in an immediate clue--then troubleshooting is a nearly hopeless
task over the phone. If you've ever done support for UNIX
workstations you'll know what I mean; you need to get your hands in if
you're going to have any hop of fixing it.
