Samsung Announced Mass-Production of 256 GB of SSD (Solid State Drive) for Notebooks
Wednesday night, S-Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung announced that the company has started production of its 256GB Flash SSD <http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/products/flash/ssd/2008/product/lineup.html> . The 2.5" solid-state notebook drive offers a sequential read speed of 220 mbps but faster sequential write speeds and records data at 200 mbps. The company has estimated that the unit can write 250GB of videos in about 21 minutes versus 70 minutes on a conventional 7,200 rpm rotating disk and should be able to launch apps about 10 times faster.
Where clearing out a HDD is concerned, Samsung has stated that the drive should be able to remove about 100GB per minute for a pure drive wipe while consuming just 1.1 watts of power during average use.
As with other solid-state drives, the chip-based nature of its storage also renders the drive nearly shockproof. However, no final price or availability schedule has been given to date.
