  • Thread-topic: Smart Cards (CAC) and PKCS#11 library support for third party OS X Applications...

Greetings all,

I know this has been discussed numerous times already, but as I really don't
feel I have a clear answer or solution to this issue, I'm opening this can
of worms *again* in hopes to seeing more movement from Apple on a more
complete (less 'hacked') solution (plus I have read so many posts about this
subject that I am now in a semi-zombie state and I think my fingers are
typing on their own). :)

Anyways, I feel the need for a (working) PKCS#11 library to support third
party applications that do not utilize the native OS X 'Tokend' security
infrastructure has grown to a near-critical point. At first I *could*
(barely) live without CAC enabled Firefox, however I now find myself
requiring access to my smart card (CAC) through other applications.
Specifically, the number of Adobe PDF files I (and I imagine others as well)
need to digitally sign and/or encrypt via CAC has grown and it is *really* a
waste of time for me to transfer files to a Windows Box just to accomplish
this simple task (and then back to the Mac). I can imagine a greater
increase in similar tasks as we are encouraged to print less and communicate
more 'electronically'.

I have installed CoolKey (both self-compiled and pre-built binaries) without
any success and also tested out OpenSC. However, after working on it for a
while, it appeared that my card isn't supported with the installed base and
I really didn't feel like 'hosing' my CAC in an attempt to get it working
(plus, like everyone else, I don't have that much time to work on it).

So, can anyone help with this issue or enlighten me to any future plans?
Any help is appreciated. Maybe I just need a vacation and everything will
work magically when I get back. One can always hope... :)

V/R,
