I have been working with Apple on this exact problem for months and
I can say that SL does fix this problem. That said, there are still
some "minor" issues dealing with certificate retrieval because of
the way certain certificates are created. I am hoping now that SL is
released, the Apple engineers I have been working with will explain
what the current status is and what things might still need to be
done, including how to configure Directory Access properly.
To follow up on what Peter said... AD and OD should both allow for
certificates to be pulled from the directory in Snow Leopard. Ensure
that the directory service is set in either your Auth path or your
Contacts path. Note that Directory Utility is now in /System/Library/
CoreServices...
At which point Mail.app, Address Book and others should use be able to
get public keys out of the directory.
For Entrust and other non-AD or OD systems there may be issues, some
of which as Peter says are known and we're still looking into. Please
file any bugs that you might as that will help us to ferret out where
the gremlins lie.
