I tried that, doesn't work (Leopard server). I can do that on the
server machine, mount that image, and expose it to everyone ELSE for
Time Machine. But I can't go back to the Time Machine control panel and
say "use this sparseimage drive for Time Machine backups for this server."
Since I'm running FileVault on the laptop, I'm not using TimeMachine for
my home directory there. The laptop account is a Mobile account
(synching is now working much better, thank you Apple...). What I want
to be able to do is restore files from the Server's Time Machine backup
and then re-synch to put them back onto the laptop (or move them
manually.) The account on the Server account is not FileVaulted for
that very reason.
I think an easy means to do backups, etc to encrypted images, providing
security in case of theft of the physical devices, is a key capability
Apple needs to provide for pretty much everyone.

Can't you create an encrypted disk image on the external drive, mount it, then point Time Machine at it????
