Mike,
All good comments—thanks. I’m cc:’ing the Fed Talk list on this because I think all the alternatives you list are well worth mentioning again and again.

Dave

David,
A lot of this kind of documentation (without the specfics for this command) is also available in the "CAC for Mac" guide produced by EDS to support users on the Navy/Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI). I host a copy of it here: https://sites.google.com/a/compsolve.net/mac-cac/ along with some suggestions on running a VM for accessing DoD functions on a Mac.
I'd also suggest that your document might be a little confusing for some more inexperienced users; it starts with recommending things like adding Parallels (no mention of VMware fusion, which I prefer), more RAM, Toast, and Office 2008. For most users, I'd suggest that Open Office or Lotus Symphony are free alternatives to office, and the Mac OS X disc utility can handle most of the basic tasks Toast would do.More difficult is getting a copy of ActiveIdentity for the Windows VM.
Running a VM in an integration mode is a great way to get DoD functionality on a mac, but I'd also strongly recommend at least a free (such as AVG Free) or DoD downloadable antivirus suite, Windows Defender, and mention of configuring the Windows Firewall, and running the Windows VM in user (vs. Admin) modes.

Greetings,
I just uploaded a document to AKO called “Using a Macintosh in a DoD Environment.” It’s a set of step-by-step instructions for setting up a Mac so that it has a virtual machine loaded and the Mac side is CAC enabled. We’ve used it here at our Army Battle Lab for setting up MacBook Pros and iMacs.
Here are the links:
Document Using a Macintosh in a DoD Environment-090112.docx
<https://www.us.army.mil/suite/doc/15376480>
Located in Folder My Private Folder
<https://www.us.army.mil/suite/folder/3355633>
It should be available to anyone who can get on AKO. Registrations are auto approved for read-only access.
If you have trouble getting to the link or don’t have AKO access, please send me a note off-list. I also welcome any comments or suggestions for improving the document.
