I changed out the boot disk of a Leopard laptop (not running OS X
server) using TM and it worked fine. I did a new TM backup (after re-
initializing the TM drive), then a "restore system from TM" after
booting the upgraded laptop from the Leopard DVD and everything came
back fine (even better than when I did a similar upgrade using CCC
years ago). I've not done a OS X Server, however.

(Neither has any other backup/restore I've tried.) I don't know if
there's something peculiar about Leopard Server that prevents you
from restoring it. Besides 'restore system frome Time Machine' (via
booting from a Leopard distribution disk), I've tried restoring from
the disk clones I had (e.g. those done by Carbon Copy Cloner), also
with no luck. The disk shows up in System Preferences -> Startup
Disk, but when I select the OS X Server installation and then try to
start, I get the [?] folder indicating an invalid system (and it
goes to the other drive and boots up Leopard 'client'.)
So it looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and do a complete
reinstall of OS X Server, and that is -not an appealing
proposition-, to say the least. (In part that's because I'll need
to go back through the documentation and basically re-learn what I
did to get Server working in the first place.)
