Unless and until someone fleshes out crypto operations in Javascript,
complete with platform-level access control, *and* gets the plethora of
JS engines to support it, it's not going to happen in a simple Web
2.0-style application like Gmail and Zimbra are and Exchange wants to be.
Currently the only way it can work is via a Java applet. Microsoft
doesn't *do* Java. The only mail system *I* know of that provides an
applet to do S/MIME is Sun's Java System Messaging Server.
