Their solution does remind me a little of cooperative multitasking. It consists of a set of APIs to do very controlled multitasking based on a number of use cases: playing audio in the background, VOIP, GPS-based location (sucks power though), a cell tower location service (not as accurate, but sucks less power), freeze-dry your app and its state when put in the background (so it isn't actually running), and a few other things.
I think it will be a nice compromise between functionality and power management.
