Interesting that you were trying to do this. I was also thinking about trying to merge two accounts I have somehow obtained, one is firstname.lastname, the other was email@hiddenn. If I log in to manage the one that is not an email address, it shows TWO SEPARATE fields for the apple ID and the primary email address. If I log into the one where the ID IS an email address, there is only ONE field for the apple ID / primary email address. I expect that there may be confusion because the behavior is definitely different depending on the type of ID being used.
Maybe Apple needs to fix the way their information displays so that the two fields are always separate (and can therefore be updated separately).
Ideally, I'd like my itunes purchases from these two separate accounts to show up under the firstname.lastname apple ID and then get rid of the other account, but I'm not sure how to do that unless Apple fixes the account management interface behavior to be consistent.
Still wondering too about trying to change the apple id on the one account to use the pre-existing id from the other account... I'm guessing something along the way will prevent this, and I won't ever be able to merge the two. Ugh.
