Probably everyone was using them in the field in full cases, so you couldn't tell it was the new iPhone.
I have one, and was able to see the effect of the death grip as a novelty. But it hasn't affected me a bit in daily use. I don't use a case, and normally hold the phone in my left hand when using an app, but I use my thumb near the volume buttons and the corner of the phone against my palm, so it doesn't bridge the gap. I mostly use Bluetooth or ear phone for calls. So I never see the issue in practice.
