Same here. Tested first, saw the reception issue (shocking even if I
knew what to expect). Bought a bumper. Problem went away entirely
(same number of bars using the bumper vs letting the iPhone sit on a
table).
I believe Apple's engineers didn't catch the issue. I don't think
Apple is doing the right thing by firing anyone. Everyone makes
mistakes. Even Apple. I'm not sure why Apple doesn't just admit they
dropped the ball, and offer free bumpers to everyone. Heck, I'm
holding out for the iPhone 4 compatible Ottercase...but I didn't
hesitate to get a bumper to put an end to this issue.

Just bought the bumper yesterday and it 100% fixes my reception
issue. I am very upset with the attenuation problem if you hold the
bare antenna with bare hands, but oh well. I still find the iPhone 4
to be the best phone I've ever had, and I love the quality of the
bumper. Great phone.
