I definitely think it would be the easy way out.
Given how forgiving the entire market is of Apple right now (small detractors not withstanding), it would make sense for them to setup a “credit for case”. They could even spin it as “pretty phone deserves protection” Let users apply it towards case and instruct staff to encourage people to buy a case that covers the antenna edges, bumper case or otherwise.
Would be less expensive way out too I bet ;-)
