I've heard this rumor recently as well "Apple has a vested interest in H.264 cause they own it..."
After a quick search around, I can't find anything that says Apple owns H.264, or even makes money off of it.
Anyone else can find a link?

They did great work but could never be Googled because their content could never be indexed. Industrial design shops are sometimes accused of “Form over Function” and Flash web sites are a great example. HTML5 = Form + Function; where the “function" is the ability to process the content using any browser (aka anything that reads HTML, including the Google crawler)
