Most signs (e.g., rumors of production dates) point to the fall for Apple to start branching out beyond AT&T, but it may be sooner.
For example, I think AT&T's decision to allow everyone whose 2-year contracts expire *anytime* in 2010 to be automatically eligible for the new 2-year contract with the iPhone 4 is an effort to lock the people in now before Apple announced additional carriers this year. In other words, if your contract expires in October, AT&T has no incentive to offer you a discounted deal on the iPhone 4 *today* unless they feel you might jump ship in October.
I also think Apple's decision to offer the iPad 3G data contracts only with AT&T is also in question since AT&T has changed their "unlimited" offer on the iPad. That must have been one of the fastest contract changes in history. Now that the widely acknowledged sweet deal for the iPad data plan isn't there anymore, there is no incentive for Apple to stay exclusive to AT&T.
