Apple has had some form of server software since AppleShareIP, which iirc
ran on 68k machines before PPC. I know for sure that ASIP was available in
1994, so that is 16 years. The quality of some of that software has
been...sketchy...<cough>early OSXS</cough>...but the company has always had
something out there. The current OSXS seems to be pretty good (calendar
server notwithstanding).
You can get high quality server-grade hardware from HP, put VMware on it,
and run OSXS as a virtual machine. The faceplate might not be as pretty, but
it will get through Purchasing and a security inspection with no questions
asked.
