Mine's an Intel so I couldn't tell him any differently. He also said something about being disabled by Snow Leopard. Is the Intel requirement real? What's the problem with Snow Leopard? What if anything can he do to get the CAC reader to run on his pre-Intel Mac? I use PIV II CAC on Snow Leopard every day without issue.
The catch is that if it's one of the newer CACs, you need to download the CAC-NG (BETA v0.95) posted at <http://smartcardservices.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/installers>, and it only supports the Gemalto TOP DL GX4 144...but this problem isn't unique to Snow Leopard.
There are issues with Leopard working at all with some of the new CACs. I haven't seen the issues firsthand so I don't know what they are, but since the "solution" is to upgrade to Snow Leopard, that may be where the Intel "requirement" is coming from, since Snow Leopard only runs on Intel processors.
