Actually, OSXServer already consolidated everything into one OS. All Apple is doing is selling OSXServer with the typical consumer applications, e.g., iTunes, etc., as OSX Lion. All of this for the same price as the old server-less OSX (I would like this confirmed. Read it on a MacWorld site but I want to see it from Apple. Unlimited server capabilities for only $129. That's a great deal.).
Yes, Linux has been doing this since the beginning. What do we call a Lion installation? A server or a desktop OS? Depending on how it's labeled, it will require a different set of controls. I can't wait to see how the official security guide will be handled. Will it finally address all the server applications or only the non-server, basic installation?
How will government installations deal with the optional server installation? Will a controlled-configuration of server provide better, more manageable Mac-to-Mac sharing as an alternative to (Windows-based) file servers? Lion server has the ability to create and configure sharepoints (hate that word, it reminds me too much of a Windows Sharepoint server), most likely with the ability to use a centralized authentication/authorization server. Where can we go from here? Will Lion improve our information sharing infrastructure or will the majority of its capabilities be turned off so it works within the draconian Microsoft infrastructure?
Food for thought for the weekend......
