The installation of Lion, especially the server option, was a whole lot of fun (sarcasm).
1. You need to have an App Store account. I suggest creating one for work (if you're doing this for work), then making sure you don't violate procurement processes by buying unapproved software. Configure the App Store before trying to download any software.
2. Find the proper ADC webpage, https://developer.apple.com/devcenter/mac/prerelease/index.action. Click on Step #1 to get your redemption code. It shows up as a pop up.
3. Go to the App Store and enter the redemption code (see instructions). Once it starts, it doesn't look like anything is happening. The download is almost 4GB so be prepared for it to take some time. In the App Store, click on Purchases to monitor the download process.
4. Once it's done, you'll have an application called "Install OS X" in your /Applications folder.
5. If all you want to do is install the client, go ahead and run the installer. You need to have a Core 2 Duo Intel Mac as a minimum running 10.6.6. This is a beta release so install it on a test Mac or an external disk (yes, it installed fine on a FW800 disk). It took about 20 minutes for mine to install.
----If you want the Server option you might get lucky and have it install during your first time. I was not lucky. The Server option is accessed in the Customize option. I've seen comments that you have to use Apple's Software Update Server but I don't see why since the installer has the software. Mine generated an error but I finally got it to install. Here's how.
a. After successfully installing without the Server option, I copied the Installer to the Lion disk, booted up in Lion then ran the installer again. I selected the Server option and it said I only needed to install 1.07GB. This time the installer ran but took almost an hour. The results are an application called /Application/Server and the traditional applications in the /Applications/Server folder. Server.app has a new GUI and looks like its an enhanced standalone server application while Workgroup Manager, and all the other Original OSXServer applications are in the folder.
Good luck. If you find your redemption code doesn't give you anything, check out the ADC forums under the special Lion developer release section called Installation. You'll have company and possible solutions.
