In some ways, the absence of an optical drive could help some government installations, especially those worrying about reading and writing to removable media. That's one less port to worry about. It's the initial installation of the OS that concerns me but after that, I see no work-related problems with not having an optical drive. One less mechanical item to worry about.
At home I use the optical drive but nowhere near as often as I used to. It's mainly used for ripping my purchased collection of CDs. I don't remember the last time I purchased software on a CD/DVD other than the OS.
