Now, I know who is my new inspiration (Mike). We can talk cars any day offline (smile). Thanks for that personal connection! Steve loved to laugh so remember that.
I too am an ex-Apple employee that had the privilege & pleasure of meeting Steve Jobs several times when I worked at Infinite Loop. It wasn't uncommon for him to be sitting at Café Macs just talking or walking from building 1 to building 2 (where I was) during the day. One day, he was coming from Jonathan Ive's office and he and I were in the same corridor and I turned around and he was right next to me. I was working in Quicktime on Mpeg4 at the time so we chit chatted about it and Steve backed into a table and knocked it over! So here is Steve Jobs and I picking up a table and putting the materials back on it as we walk down the hallway. We laughed about it and from that moment on he would always wave at me when he saw me on campus. (I wasn't hard to miss as one of the only tall, dark skinned guys there ;-)
I also got to see other sides of him in meetings before product launches and behind the scenes at Macworld! The man was POWERFUL. A true visionary and he did change the world. R.I.P Steve Jobs.

I'm not afraid to say I cannot stop crying. I knew Steve in a lot of ways a lot of people didn't. It was 2004... 12:54pm PST to be exact... I had received a VIP tag to WWDC that year (I love you Tracy Matteo!)...
All I wanted in life was to meet Steve, to talk to him... I was told it would never, ever, ever happen. I've never let anything keep me down, and that day, at that moment, Steve's handlers blocked me from going in to talk... I yelled something (which I won't share, but I think Tracy and Bob Hernandez will remember if they are on this list), and Steve turned around.... he talked to me, we hugged each other and I got a picture of it...
I swore to Steve I would never share that picture, and I never have... until today. My mom had it, and a few Apple people...
That conversation and hug kicked off a relationship that opened more doors in my life than would have ever been possible...
I went from a lowly GS12, working paycheck to paycheck, to a thriving EHR business.. and when the first iPhone came out in 2007 my life changed forever.
I have three Porsches, a 6000 square foot house, a Mercedes CL600 - none of them financed... we were featured day one on the App store with the iPhone in 2008... as well as the iPad when it came out in 2010...
I would email steve and would talk about things... it is a relationship i'll always cherish... today is a sad day for the world.
Whether you love apple or hate them, apple has changed the world several times, and others may copy, but if Apple hadn't done it, nobody else would have either.
I sold my EHR company in 2009 to "make a difference" for those who needed it and came back to IHS...
RIP Steve.... :( :(
Mike

I only ever got to meet him for a brief minute but I can't help but be truly sad at his passing. May we all be so lucky to find our passion as he did.
