I've had tolerable success at home, using a combination of a Flash or
plugin blocker for Safari, plus setting OpenDNS to block selected ad
domains, after observing DNS traffic for a while using OpenDNS.
By using OpenDNS to block ad domains, all devices on my home network see
fewer ads (e.g. iPads, iPhones, ...).
Blocking ads also blocks ad-hosted malware attacks.
