My experience is similar to MSG Wolf’s – I purchased an OWC SSD for my 2010 MBP, and the increase in battery life was worth the price of admission.

Try Other World Computing's. SSD drives.
They several different capacities in the older ATA format and reasonably priced for what your getting and excellent warranty.
It will make your old tank faster, give longer battery life, quieter, cooler and add years more life to the system since drive failure seems to be the thing most common to bring a laptop down.

I just installed a 750 GB 7200 rpm Seagate Hybrid drive in my 2009 MacBook Pro. Replaced a stock 320 gb drive, can't remember the make. Speed increase was dramatic in my experience. Have only used it for 4 months so I can't comment on realiability

Supports Taylor's observation....
On a related topic, anyone (else) have experience with Seagate hybrid drives?

I'm looking at Fujitsu and Hitachi drives I've pulled from laptops in the 3-4 year old range. I did find an old Toshiba ATA drive from my daughter's white iBook.

Thanks. All of the drives I've pulled from Macbooks have been Toshibas.

FWIW, Apple uses far more than Toshiba. You could end up with Samsung, WD, or others. Apple buys in bulk, but is not locked to just Toshiba.
