This is such a load of BS....
I have three Mac Pros, only one of which will support Mountain Lion... and the thing is, that this is a move apple is ELECTING to do, to force people to upgrade hardware.
It would be one thing if it were a Mac Mini, but these workstations cost around $4500... and to have shelf life being forced upon it so Apple can sell more hardware is BS...
Don;t take my work for it though, 9to5mac shows that with a little plist modifications and manual terminal labor you CAN get mountain lion to work on the old Mac Pros... there is NO reason that it cannot run on an old MacPro... In fact, you can even get Mountain Lion to work under parallels on an old mac pro, yet apple won't allow the install?
I'm very close to my limit with Apple on this kind of crap... thankfully it looks like Microsoft may have caught up (and even surpassed) Apple on the OS level...
Sure iOS has 800,000 apps... most of which are crap... since I am ranting, bragging about the number of apps on the app store is as absurd as Walmart saying "we sell over 15,000 items in every store, on every shelf"...
Todd and Lee: If you look around, you'll see how to make ML run on your old MacPro.. eventually someone will build an easy to use patcher, but we shouldn't have to do that.

Yes, I discovered that earlier today while trying to install the latest developer GM build on a Intel Mac Pro 1,1. The minimum requirement has to be Mac Pro 3,1

Alas, it looks official now. My Mac Pro, which has served as my primary workstation for years but still works quite well, is now officially obsolete. It won't support Mountain Lion.
Here is the command you can run from your Terminal to check if your Mac Pro (and other systems?) will support Mountain Lion
$ ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
A result with <"EFI32"> in it indicates if you are obsolete.

Confirmed: Mountain Lion sends some 64-bit Macs gently into that good night
