Over the weekend, I updated my "inside server" running Lion Server to ML Server. (This provides Mobile Account synch, DNS, LDAP, File server and VPN server. The 'outside server' Mini hosts some external websites.)
The process was a bit drawn out. It took the better part of Sunday to back up the hard drive to a disk image (to allow me an easy restore if this didn't work.) Then I loaded Mountain Lion, let it boot up, and then downloaded ML Server. I launched the Server application. It ground for maybe 30-45 minutes, then popped out a (unfortunately typically uninformative) error message. It appears ML Server -insists- you have to have a self-signed SSL cert for the server; I got a "this cert is untrusted" message in another window. I changed trust settings for that SSL cert (on 127.0.0.1), and then rebooted the Mini.
So far, no problems. Mobile account synching seems to be -markedly faster- (that's A Good Thing, since that's my primary reason for buying Server in the first place; it appears Apple's implementation of rsync had some real issues.) I haven't tried VPN yet, but the other activated Server facilities (including DNS) seem to be working OK.
According to the Lion and previous Server installs, my situation is 'unusual' (although I do -not- believe it is.) I have a single (static) IP address and primary domain, and getting that DNS setup right wasn't easy. Now that I have it right (or at least right enough, given the mysteries of DNS :-), the rest of the Server facilities work OK. The SL Server control over Apache modules was a lot more powerful than the current Web configurator in ML Server. That'll probably be an issue when (if?) I roll the 'outside server' (running SL Server) to a newer OS.
Next step will be to replace the current Core 2 Duo 'inside server' with my new i5 Mini. That'll have to wait for a while, my real job is busy right now :-)
