You were definitely not the only one…
I also noticed the speed increase over the iPad Classic I had been running. Night and day and the iPad Classic had not run out of steam by any imagination.
I have not noticed any heat what so ever from the iPad Nu over the iPad Classic, and the iPad Classic was largely body temperature if it was not cool to the touch. Mind you I used my iPad Classic on flights for hours, especially from DC to LA.
Apple's battery handling is a god-send. I was most hesitant about the trade up because I had frequently nearly 12 hours of battery life from my iPad Classic. Glad to see that they have the same approach in the iPad Nu.
Don't know if I could recommend getting an iPad Nu… I mean really, it does not fit perfectly in all of the old iPad 2 cases. What on earth was Apple thinking! <grin>.

At least I've convinced myself I do for all that money. ;0) No, seriously, that was the convincing part for getting it for my vision so I'm glad that works. Next (after charging) is to see if the dictation recognizes my speech.

Clearly, there's a lot more power consumed by the new display, the quad-core GPU and the LTE chip (if applicable). Even if the new chips are more efficient than the previous generation, there's going to be a greater degree of loss in the form of heat.

I don't know if anyone else has ever played I.B. II, but it's got to be one of the most graphics-intensive apps available. Consider it a worst-case scenario.

The aluminum back shell is being used as the heat sink for the A5X (not to mention any other heat-generating chips), so it's natural for it to feel warmer on average than the previous 'Pads.
