Dr. Beatty -
We're not Dot Mil (Social Security Administration), and we're not dealing with iOS devices on our network, but we are trying to implement the STIG for OS X. While we can implement the settings, we don't have any way of running a SCAP tool or STIG checker against the final image, so we would be interested in your STIG checker.
Any chance we could work something out?

Greetings Ed,
One alternative is the "ShoeBox" that I worked on under my dissertation. Hey, that might not be a bad thing to accredit since I am throwing that into the STIG checker for the Macs. I hope to have a prototype ready by Thursday afternoon. Do you want in?

P.S. You can always laterally transfer me to some other branch that sees me as more valuable than a screen door on a submarine. Like say, RDT&E?

The problem is FIPS 140-2. For a mobile device like an iPad, anything that is stored within the app needs to be FIPS 140-2. Now you can use Good For Enterprise, which provides a sandbox that is FIPS 140-2 compliant. They also provide code for the developers, so they can leverage their app with the storage requirement. By the way, Good for Enterprise is Exchange dependant.
The main problem, not many apps support it, or are verifiable. App control needs to be enforced, so only the authorized apps are utilized. From what I understand, if you have a developers account, you can run your own iTunes server for management of the devices. I have not gotten that far.
Apple is trying to get FIPS modules verified and approved, but it is still pending review, so that could be a while. If that does happen, I would suspect that it would cover the entire device, which would allow the military folk to use any app, without the developer building in the capability. Lets Hope!!!!

Thanks. Any input you can give on how we can best leverage an Ipad would be appreciated, especially in keeping with regs and policies. We're basically being told we can't keep anything other than public information on them, nothing official, which doesn't sound right. While our training material is for public release I can't see how any other organization (without dealing with training) could use the things without keeping something official on them. It sounds like overkill.

Since this is public if you don't want to reply on list please do reply off list so I know who to go to for .mil only questions offline.
