I agree that it would have been nice to have a transition path. Maps on a mobile device should be considered a critical service. It should be noted that there are alternatives available in the App Store (some kind of expensive though), and there are rumors that a Google Maps app will be available in the store soon.
Another thing that isn't clear to me is whether the underlying map data Apple is using is bad or if the software that reads and presents the data is bad. If it is the former, it is going to be a long and expensive fix (go out and get good data). If it is the latter, a software patch could alleviate a lot of the pain fairly soon.
