Are we talking just about Java from within a sandbox from the web browser, or are we talking about Java in general, i.e. as an unfortunately popular programming language? Getting rid of Java for those of us that do science is basically a non-starter. Lots of useful scientific applications require a Java runtime. Two that immediately come to mind are Matlab and MIPAV. There are many others.
