After receiving more replies than I was expecting, it definitely
appears that Casper has a decent presence in a variety of .gov
agencies. So far I've heard from agencies including SSA, DOE, NASA,
NIH, NIST, FDA, multiple .mil branches, and more.
Rather than emailing everyone back individually, I'll just ask my
questions here - feel free to respond back to the list or privately to
me if you'd rather not discuss publicly. I may be contacting a few
people who emailed me directly yesterday as well based on potential
similarities in our environments.
I heard back from one person that Casper was a no-go in their agency
due to the dependence of MySQL, and inability to get it approved.
Other than that, would any of you mind sharing any issues you had to
overcome with Casper, snags, "gotchas", etc?
Our primary goal is to use Casper for enforcing and reporting on
security policies, but we are also looking using the software update
function, possibly deployment options, etc. (No plans for iOS
management). One other major concern is multiple site replication,
bandwidth throttling, scheduling replication to occur outside of
regular business hours, etc., so if anyone has experience there, I'd
appreciate hearing about it.
Basically, I and most of our "Mac team" are satisfied that Casper will
meet our needs, but our CIO wants more examples of use in similar .gov
agencies, especially ones with similar setups and concerns as ours
(ability to enforce a security baseline, ability to audit on those
settings, ability to export the data into Microsof SCCM, and ability
to deal with multiple remote locations, many of which will be on
slower (T1-category) WAN links.
thanks to everyone who responded to my original request!
Taylor
