My understanding is the application leverages the dock port API (whatever
it's called) for peripherals. If the peripheral is a wired card reader,
you're done; supporting the peripheral is your app's business and iOS
doesn't care.
For Bluetooth card readers, the peripheral is a BT radio module and the
app must provide a complete BT software stack. Apps are not allowed to
add new BT device classes even for single application use; but you can get
around it by driving your own BT radio.
