The quest is not where e-mail _should_ be filtered; the question is why
can my iPhone filter e-mail.
IMHO, there are two answers:
1) Folks at Apple also believe that filtering should be done at the
server. That why Google and Exchange and just about every other e-mail
service has server side filters. I don't use iCloud, but I assume it does
too as it wouldn't be worth anything if it didn't.
2) While the phone has the horse power, operations like background
filtering can kill battery life. Apple would have two options to implement
it: a) let it run int he background and potentially kill battery life, or
2) run the filter when you open the Mail app, but that would slow down
opening the app and make for GUI oddities. Both options are probably
objectionable to Apple so they just don't do it.
