Perhaps it's the use of the term "unlocked." Sprint iPhone 4s were unlocked. That is, to use them with another carrier, perhaps across the pond, one didn't need to do anything except pop in a new SIM card. Verizon, on the other hand, required one to call customer service and announce that you were traveling and needed them to unlock the phone, which they would do (I've been told).
We used a U.S. Sprint iPhone 4s while traveling in Australia and in Europe and it worked fine, without any additional Sprint meddling. Just needed to guy a new SIM card and pop it in.
I get the feeling that this may have changed with the 5s.
