I'm sorry, but in my experience that's not true unless you (or some
program) explicitly put them in there. Right now my CAC is plugged into
my Catalina system but none of my certificates appear in Keychain Access
at all.
If you use Apple Mail (or the "security" command line tool) to
decode/decrypt S/MIME mail, it will generally store certificates that it
encounters in your Keychain, so I could see people who use Apple Mail a
lot ending up with their own certificate in the Keychain. But if
you walk up to a vanilla MacOS X system and insert your CAC, you won't
see the certificates on the card in the "standard" certificate store.
AFAIK, the only way to extract smartcard certificates with native Apple
utilities is via System Information or the security command line tool.
