I worked with another developer who was doing this sort of thing (against my advice, for all the reasons outlined by Mark and Anton). They did it using MNT_UPDATE | MNT_RELOAD. This worked on Mac OS X 10.3.x but failed on Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.5 due to a bug. That bug was fixed in 10.4.6 because it was affecting other parts of the system.
