What is the current status with regards to the Finder's 'connect

Sad to say Leopard/Tiger SMB currently do not support IPv6.
I should note that, in general, there's nothing to stop a VFS plug-
in from supporting IPv6 in Connect to Server. AFP does support
IPv6 and you can enter IPv6 addresses into Connect to Server, even
on 10.4.x.
AFP certainly seems to work with a the IPv6 numerical address. Typing
afp://[::1]
results in an alert saying that you can't connect to the local
machine. On the other hand it is worth noting that the 'connecting
to server' window incorrectly displays the URL as afp://::1
From the Finder AFP/SMB do not allow you to connect to the local
machine. This is independent of IPv6.
I wonder whether VFS plugins that don't support IPv6 should throw an
exception signaling that they don't support it, or something to help
the Finder in providing a clearer error text.
Currently you get a connection failed error in the SMB case. You are
making the assumption that all file systems support TCP. Guessing the
error should be something like "The URL you have enter is not support
by the protocol". So maybe having the Plugins return an error that the
UI can display would be a better idea. Sending exception signals to
the Finder is not a good thing.
